Ephesians: The Handbook for Intercessors
I love Ephesians! Here we see who we are in Christ. You are a spirit, you have a soul, you live in a body. Remembering this fact will bring clarity to the many verses that go deep into the hidden treasures of this book and a life separated to Jesus.
I felt led to highlight some verses that I believe speak to and about the Intercessor. Notice how often scriptures mention “the heavenly places in Christ.” This is where an Intercessor, by the spirit, does their work for the Kingdom! What takes place within you is crucial for those ministries that have boots on the ground.
This is interesting: Jesus calls us to make intercession for others while “He always lives to make intercession for us.” (Hebrews 7:25) That’s Kingdom protection!
1. Ephesians 1:3-5
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will…”
1.a As we are praying before God’s throne for the lost, which includes the wicked in government places, we are being blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. A spiritual transaction of renewal takes place which helps us to remain holy and separated from a fallen world. Fulfilling the purpose of intercession is most important now for the revival of the end time.
2. Ephesians 1:10-11
“…that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him. In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will…
2.a We are predestined to fulfill the purpose of His will. While we are fulfilling God’s purpose in prayer, all things are working for our good as we look for the return of our Savior before the Great Tribulation that’s coming.
3. Ephesians 1:17-23
“… that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.”
3.a If you have not memorized this prayer, you should.
That is how you deposit what is written in the Book into your spirit. This will empower your words. We are to enforce Kingdom authority upon enemies of the Gospel. Since you are in Jesus, you are seated in heavenly places far above all principality and power. That means every spirit-filled tongue talking Christian is responsible to be sheriff over their jurisdiction! “The weapons of our warfare” are for prayer enforcement. See 2 Corinthians 10:1-6.
4. Ephesians 2:6
“… and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus…
4.a He has made all of His Body to sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus to rule and to reign, even when you’re alone in your prayer closet. The Kingdom of God is within you and me. It is released as we intercede over our cities, our states, and our nation. Intercession has great power when released by the indwelling Holy Spirit in you! The scripture below deals with this.
5. “Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.” (Ephesians 2:19-22)
6. Ephesians 3:10-12
“… to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him.”
6.a Here Paul continues to reveal the dispensation of the grace of God or “who we are in Christ.” He received this mystery by revelation.
Those who pray have this promise:
“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”
7. Ephesians 5:18
“And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit…”
7.a Chapters 4 and 5 are rules for Christians to live holy lives. Stress and anxiety are causes for the increase in alcoholism in our nation. Paul says to the church, “be filled with the Spirit!” That happens by praying in tongues throughout your day. When pressured with stress, cast all cares onto the Lord and start praying in tongues! Remember, the anointing is to be protected for it is necessary for powerful intercession.
8. Ephesians 5:25-27
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.”
8.a We are to be sanctified and washed with the “water of the Word” every day. Our relationship with Jesus is our highest priority in end times. His job is to present us, a glorious church…to Himself when He returns in the air to take us home.
9. Ephesians 6:10-19
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” See verses 14-18.
9.a Verse 18 reveals the reason for the armor: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful…
Being watchful or being alert to things that come to steal your position is your responsibility. In the military, soldiers guard the perimeter of the camp day and night against attack. Guard your heart.
“He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive…” (John 7:38-39)
